THE GREAT MAP OF THE MODERN FOURTH WAY Waking up in ordinary life — the whole journey in one figure Every concept, law, practice, and process of the book — and nothing more do — one level up IDENTIFICATION — attention flows out and is captured THE DREAM — waking sleep, eyes open the crowd CHURNS — many I’s, each calling itself “you” BUFFERS seal the cracks; CONSCIENCE waits beneath THE DESCENT — Part I: the situation MAN 4 the aim; the deputy steward holds the empty seat MAN 5 unity — the permanent I MAN 6 every connection live — the threshold MAN 7 CRYSTALLIZED — one will; what is built cannot be taken THE ASCENT — crystallization, rung by rung IN THE BEGINNING THIS — the one awareness, prior to every story. What you are was never born into the machine; it only fell asleep inside one. The descent is not a mistake. Every complete map draws the same figure — down, a bottom, a turn, up — and the sleep is only the finished first half. THE RETURN — AND THE GIFT At the edge of the map, effort meets its limit and the doer is seen through. Who am I? — the seeker turns, and finds only THIS. What climbed was awareness all along; there was never anywhere to go. Yet the journey was not for nothing: a crystallized being comes back — experience made permanent, awareness awake inside a life. THE ENNEAGRAM — the two laws in one figure; the flat circle is the top-down view of a spiral: do arrives one level up THE LAW OF THREE active passive neutralizing Nothing happens without a third force. Two forces alone are a stalemate — and AWARENESS is the third force you carry into any deadlock you own. Six orders of triad govern all doing. THE LAW OF OCTAVES do re mi fa sol la si do mi–fa si–do Every process stalls at two INTERVALS; a SHOCK — force from outside the line — carries it across. The first arrives at the gap; the second must be placed in advance. Nothing finishes by momentum. why everything that starts, stops — and how to finish anyway THE TURN — Part III: the method, hour by hour SELF-OBSERVATION — observe before you change anything THE STOP — the whole machine halted mid-gesture, and seen THE BODY — posture, tension, breath: the honest anchor NON-EXPRESSION of negative emotion — decline to feed the leak DIVIDED ATTENTION — the world and yourself, both at once ALARM CLOCKS — catch yourself asleep; change them often SELF-REMEMBERING — attention flowing two ways at once ten honest seconds of PRESENCE — the machine cannot do it; you can 1 · sleep in bed 2 · waking sleep — ordinary life 3 · self-consciousness 4 · objective consciousness THE FOUR STATES the turn does not happen by itself — you are the shock THE ENGINE — Part V: transformation FIRST FOOD — what you eat audit lightly SECOND FOOD — the air notice, no more THIRD FOOD — IMPRESSIONS the food nobody audits: the real assignment An impression received asleep goes nowhere. Received in PRESENCE — at the exact point of entry — it transforms: the FIRST CONSCIOUS SHOCK. Presence is metabolism. The yield: the machine’s finest fuel — the same premium energy the sex center runs on — the fuel of everything higher. So keep an IMPRESSION DIET: what enters the eyes and ears is what you become. LIVING IT — Part VI: nothing wasted Friction is the gymnasium: the person who irritates you is the equipment. Met with presence, difficulty becomes CONSCIOUS, INTENTIONAL SUFFERING — payment, not loss. THE SECOND CONSCIOUS SHOCK: negative emotion caught at the instant of arising and transformed — neither expressed nor suppressed. INTERNAL CONSIDERING (keeping accounts of how you are treated) is replaced by EXTERNAL CONSIDERING — real attention to the other. And keep the AIM warm — years, not weekends. HOW THE TURN FINDS YOU A influences arise inside ordinary life. B influences carry meaning IN from outside it. C influences pass only person to person. Something in you collects the B’s — the MAGNETIC CENTER — until one day it steers you to a book, a person, a way. That is how this map found you. THE FOUR WAYS The fakir works the body; the monk, the heart; the yogi, the mind. Methods, not religions — each demands leaving life, develops one center, and stays fragile. THE FOURTH WAY works all three centers at once, begins from understanding, and is built INSIDE life — so its results survive contact with life. It is the way of the SLY MAN — who knows what to take, and how, without leaving his kitchen. BELIEVE NOTHING. VERIFY EVERYTHING. THE MACHINE — Part II: ordinary life at the bottom of the arc intellectual emotional moving instinctive sex TWO HIGHER CENTERS broadcasting — nothing receives wrong work — centers steal each other’s fuel each center has moving, emotional, and intellectual PARTS — attention’s three depths CENTER OF GRAVITY makes the three types: Man 1 (moving) · Man 2 (feeling) · Man 3 (thinking) — three flavors of one sleep the FORMATORY APPARATUS answers in slogans while you are elsewhere; the CHIEF FEATURE is the axle the whole act turns on I I I I I I I I I many I’s — the churn carriage · horse · driver — and the master’s seat, EMPTY ESSENCE (small, real) wears a PERSONALITY (large, borrowed) IDENTIFICATION is the glue; SLEEP is the state; the DREAM is the life — and yet: under the buffers, CONSCIENCE — the felt truth of the whole being at once — never stopped waiting — EVERY CHAPTER ENDS IN PRACTICE — first day · first week · first month · first year — Chapter 17 gathers THE WORK’s complete toolkit the SECOND LINE OF WORK: with and for others (work groups, Appendix A) — knowledge and being must grow together into UNDERSTANDING read it three times: once as a story, once as a study, once as a practice We are THIS.
